John Grenfell & son
Funeral Directors. Formerly D. Davies
Est 1880

John Grenfell & Son Funeral Directors (formerly D. Davies Est 1880) are an independent family firm from four generations of undertakers.

The first was Tom Grenfell, a Co-op coachbuilder/undertaker, as was the requirement in those days. Pictured here (left) outside St. Mary's Church Stannington 1948. This was the last funeral he ever conducted.

The second generation was Tom's eldest son John Grenfell pictured here (left) in his younger days wearing his top hat in his home town of Ashington in 1938. John served his time as a Co-op joiner and took the role as a local undertaker. A role which was to serve many families in the Northumberland area. John was employed as Co-op manager for the Building & Funeral department for many years, but when the Ashington Co-op became the North Eastern Co-op, John and his son Bob Grenfell, who was also a joiner, decided to leave the Co-op's employment.

In 1971 John Grenfell and his son Bob took over the family firm D. Davies in Bedlington, which had been established in 1880, pictured here the original undertakers on Front Street, Bedlington This company of course then became John Grenfell & Son as we know it today.

John & Bob Grenfell arranged and conducted funerals for bereaved families in the North East region until John retired in 1982. Bob then managed the family business until his own son, also named John Grenfell, completed his engagement with the R. A. F. This being the fourth generation of Funeral Directors.

As one of the few independent family Funeral Directors remaining Bob (left) & John Grenfell (right) attend to families in Bedlington, Ashington and Blyth areas.

Families from Widdrington and the Amble area are cared for by Keith MacDonald (left), a director with John Grenfell & Son since 1989.
